The Hamster Wheel
“Life is not fair, get used to it” – Bill Gates.
The majority of us agree that life can feel overwhelming at times. We constantly have to juggle life’s demands while also searching to find purpose & happiness. If you are optimistic, you might tell yourself that surely something is going to happen in your favor and then you will be successfully living the life that you envisioned. If you are pessimistic, it might feel a little like you are Russell Crowe from Gladiator fighting against tigers that pop out from hidden traps while you ask yourself “Is this really my situation?”.
If you feel this way, you are not alone. In fact, this is quite common.
But what about those people who seem to fly gracefully through life? The ones who seem to “have it all”? Do you ever wonder why or how they are able to pull this off? This post is to work towards changing some thoughts that should be described as “misguided thinking”.
The Hamster Wheel
The Hamster Wheel is the term that symbolizes the people who go through life running in circles (and making the same mistakes), instead of progressing or trying to progress. There are many reasons for this but here are the main ones.
- Change is hard.
- Society wants you to fit in – therefore you do.
- You are afraid to be uncomfortable.
99.99% of people in life are not going to win some proverbial lottery. The proverbial lottery is the idea that you are going to meet someone or have something happen to you that is going to give you your happiness, your success or anything you desire in life. This is unachievable. You are the master of your own universe. Therefore, it is up to you to determine how the hero in your story fights the tigers that pop out from the hidden chambers. The only way to get what you truly want in life is to go out & take it! There is no cutting corners nor any free handouts. Again, “Life is not fair, get used to it.” (FYI-if you are hoping to win the Lotto, you have a better chance of being struck by lightning, TWICE.)
Now let’s go through a mental process. Ask yourself these questions.
- Are you currently happy with your situation?
- Have you tried to make any changes to your current situation?
If you answered “Yes” to either question – congratulations! Continue on your path with enthusiasm and you are certain to succeed. If you answered “No” to both of these questions – ask yourself these questions.
- What do you want to achieve within your lifetime?
- Are there steps that you can take TODAY to work towards this?
- Why are you not doing this?
Unless you have a really good reason, then what are you afraid of? The one commonality on this planet between all humans is that regardless of your race, gender, age, wealth status, etc. we are all going to pass away one day. It is inevitable. It is the law of nature. But this should be something that fuels you! YOLO right? Why wait around to pursue the live that you were destined to live?
